Picture of Rare Phlox Moth

Imagine my surprise when I discovered I had photographed a rare phlox moth rather than a weird looking bug. We have quite a lot of different colored phlox in Parker County, Texas - white, pink and deep purple. When I saw the phlox moth I had to quickly shoot the photo because I knew from experience that most bugs don't sit still for long periods of time.

When I shared the picture with my husband he suggested that I contact a university to get an identification as we had searched through all of our insect identification books without success.

We were told that the official name for the moth is: Schinia Indiana and that it's very rare for our area. This goes to show that we never know just what little gem that we'll come across when we're photographing!

I have also posted a picture of the deep purple phlox after a rain shower. These days I find myself searching amid the pink colored phlox in particular, searching for another Schinia Indiana but it's seriously doubtful that I'll get that lucky again.
