Climate & Temperatures at Abilene State Park: Hot, hot, hot in the good old summertime and it's not uncommon for the temperatures to rise well above 100 degrees. Although the temperatures drop with the sun, camping can be miserable and sleep may be hard to come by until the early morning hours. Winter months tend to be very mild with an average low of about 30 degrees. It's not unusual for some areas of Texas
to experience rapid shifts in temperatures, so always check the currently weather conditions before heading out. I remember more than one Thanksgiving dressed in shorts while I was stationed in front of an air-conditioner. In addition, during the warmer months, if you aren't used to hotter climates, you're apt to feel much hotter until your body adapts so take extra precautions:
- don't extend yourself
- if hiking, begin with the shorter hiking routes
- never trek into an area without water and a source of energy food
- dress accordingly and be sure to smatter on the sunscreen
