Fort Richardson State Park
Fort Richardson State Park & Historic Site is located on 228 State Park Road 61 in Jacksboro, Texas. Jacksboro is a little over an hour's drive to Fort Worth, Texas and about 40 miles to Weatherford, Texas which is a fair-sized, booming town of futuristic proportions.
There are miles of trails located within Fort Richardson State Park, in addition to the Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway, a ten mile hiking, biking and equestrian trail where thrill seekers encounter wide-open prairies, reservoirs and Lost Creek.
Things to do at Fort Richardson State Park include: Hiking, biking, horseback riding, picnicking, fishing, swimming, and tenting. The state park is equipped with showers, electricity hook-ups, water as well as restrooms with flushing toilets.
There are several small basic cabins (shelters) that can be rented.
We recommend visiting Fort Richardson State Park during the cooler months of the year, particularly after a good rain has passed through which tends to leave the water-area fat and full.
Although Fort Richardson State Park isn't plugged with trees generally associated with brilliant Autumn colors, we found the mid-October display quite pleasing to the eye.
Perhaps much of the color could be attributed to the ultra-warm weather followed by sudden bursts of cooler air, prompting the leaves to turn a bit early.
Most of the trails at this state park are not too taxing, although they are a few mildly steep inclines and declines.
